Costume designer Ane Crabtree gives the rundown on dressing Margaret Atwood’s dystopia.

In the Republic of Gilead—which once was Cambridge, Massachusetts, until the state was overthrown by a theocratic, totalitarian regime—women are defined solely by their assigned roles and the men who govern them. Wives, Daughters, Aunts, Marthas, Econowives, and Handmaids live to serve their male counterparts; their free will and reproductive rights have been stripped in an attempt to restore life and order to the mostly infertile republic.

Most post-1980s high school students—those whose libraries didn’t ban the book, anyway—will recognize Gilead from The Handmaid’s Tale , a 1985 work of speculative fiction by famed writer and environmental activist Margaret Atwood . If the dystopian tale was required reading then, its new small-screen adaptation—coming to Hulu April 26th—feels like required viewing now, and not just for teens. Costume designer Ane Crabtree , tasked with bringing Gilead’s dystopian dress to life, agrees, admitting that her creative process was particularly emotional and charged because the show’s filming schedule aligned with the results of the 2016 presidential election.

“By November, when the world changed in our own personal Gilead on this side of the pond, we were well into the story, and every day the script was mirroring what was happening in the States,” says Crabtree. “The world changed in a matter of days with the commander that we have, and it was a blessing and a curse to work on this show and creatively build for that. Because I think artistic torment is actually a blessing. It was painful some days, and beautiful on other days. That’s the only way to describe it.”

Welcome to Montréal

Witness a city that's in love with festivals, the arts, good food, living well and enjoying life to the hilt.

Cuisine Capital

Blessed with one of the most exciting food scenes in North America, Montréal brims with temples dedicated to Kamouraska lamb, Arctic char and, of course, poutine (fries smothered in cheese curds and gravy). You’ll find irresistible patisseries, English pubs, 80-plus-year-old Jewish delis and magnificent food markets reminiscent of Paris. There are hipster bars with tiny bowling alleys and innumerable cafes in which to while away a lazy afternoon. And there are late-night eateries where you can linger over wondrous combinations of food and drink that you'll find nowhere else on earth.

Festivals Galore

Toronto may be Canada’s economic capital, but Montréal remains the country’s cultural juggernaut. The city, standard bearer of an entire linguistic-cultural identity – Francophone Canada – simply lives for public celebration of the arts. There are some 250 theater and dance companies, more than 90 festivals and a fascinating medley of neighborhoods where artists, writers and musicians have helped cement the city’s reputation as a great arts center. The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal is the headline event, followed by parties dedicated to world cinema, comedy and gay pride.

City of Design

Montréal is a slice of old Europe in a pie of contemporary design. A day’s wander might take in the photogenic 18th-century facades of Old Montréal before a cycling tour of the lovely Canal de Lachine, or a wander through the glittering shops and restaurants of downtown before ending at the inviting terraced cafes of Plateau Mont-Royal. The architectural sweep of the city takes in a wealth of heritage churches such as the breathtaking Basilique Notre-Dame, as well as 20th-century icons like the Stade Olympique and Habitat 67. Montréal's hotels and museums additionally push the edges of contemporary interior design.

Winter Wonderland

The Québécois love their summers and autumnal colors, but it is the winter that defines much of their lives, which slow down and become more insular in the grip of those long, dark months. With that said, the passion for life that animates Canadian Francophones does not truly dim in the cold, but is rather celebrated around cozy fireplaces, in friendly pubs, at steaming sugar shacks, and, of course, on the slopes of local mountains via skis, snowboards and toboggans.

There is no limit to nominations, but appointments authorized in this category are limited to 65 cadets at the Academy at one time. Vacancies are available for the children of deceased or 100% disabled armed forces veterans whose death or disability was determined to be service connected; or children of military personnel or federally employed civilian personnel who are in a missing or captured status. If you are eligible in this category, you will NOT be considered in the Presidential category.

The child of a parent who is in missing status is eligible if the parent is a member of the armed services or a civilian employee in active government service who is officially carried or determined to be absent in a status of missing; missing in action; interred in a foreign country; captured, beleaguered or besieged by a hostile force; or detained in a foreign country against his or her will.

Vacancies have been reserved without appointment limit for the children of Medal of Honor recipients who served in any branch of the armed forces. If pre-candidates meet the eligibility requirements and qualify on entrance requirements, they will be appointed to the Academy.

There are unlimited nominations, but only 170 appointments available annually in this category. Vacancies are available for enlisted members of regular and reserve components of the Air Force. The deadline to receive Air Force regular and reserve nominations (AF Form 1786) is December 31st. For more specific instructions on nominations in this category, see Advice to Applicants: Enlisted Airmen .

There are twenty appointments total for all categories. Honor military schools are designated by the Department of the Army, Marine Corps and Navy to nominate Academy candidates annually from among their honor students. Each honor unit may nominate five students to compete for the vacancies. Students should apply to their Senior ROTC Instructor for the nomination.

Members of college and high school honor Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC and AFJROTC) units may also apply in this category. Five students from each detachment may be nominated to compete for the authorized vacancies. Students should apply for a nomination to their professor of aerospace studies or aerospace science instructor who will recommend nominees to the head of the institution.

If you reside in a U.S. Territory, you must contact appropriate representatives to secure one of the available nominations for your territory. To request a nomination in this category, follow the guidelines in the Casadei Woman Chainembellished Fringed Leather Pumps White Size 355 Casadei ycXPnTlL
